WESTFIELD, NJ—As a little girl growing up in Clark, Daniela Palumbo of Ella Allure Interior Design Center visited her family’s Sav-Mor Upholstery shop on Staten Island, where her family has owned and operated the business for over 30 years.

“I used to sit on my dad’s cutting tables,” said Palumbo, who grew up in the industry and was managing her father’s fabric showroom by the summer after she finished high school.

When it came time for college, Palumbo, an Olympic-level gymnast, found herself turning down a full scholarship in gymnastics so that she could follow her real dream of studying interior design.

While at the New York School of Interior Design, she continued to expand her work at Sav-Mor, making site visits and offering new services to complete customer’s design schemes. She rounded out her early work experience with an interior design firm in Manhattan, but soon enough found herself back at the family business.

“As his company Sav-Mor was growing, so was I,” she said of her dad’s shop. They decided to open a second shop, this time someplace new.

“I looked into a lot of towns. Westfield felt like the perfect fit,” said Palumbo. She added, “There was a need for this in Westfield.”

Ella Allure, which sits neatly on Broad Street between Nirvana and GAP Kids, opened its doors last January. Word-of-mouth spread about their ability to design to “Every budget, every personality, every style, every taste,” Palumbo said, and clients from Westfield and beyond have kept the little shop busy from the start.

Meanwhile Daniela and sister Gabriela Palumbo were chosen by Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS as Up and Coming Designers to participate in the 2012 Picnic by Design event benefitting the foundation—a high honor for young designers and one that the women enjoyed.

But the everyday tasks of running the business seem to thrill Palumbo as much as any celebrity-studded event. During a recent visit from a representative of one fabric company, Palumbo eyed a case of lush fabric samples like a kid who just found the candy shop that comes to you.

Each of the fabric lines in Ella Allure’s extensive library, she explained, has a unique story. For example, she carries a line from a house that once made fabrics for Marie Antoinette. The shop is filled with patterns, colors and textures to fit a spectrum of styles and budgets.

A New Level of Personalized Service

Ella Allure offers anything but a one-size-fits-all approach.

“What Ella Allure offers is the personalization of a do-it-yourself project, but with my expert guidance. I try to completely eliminate that overwhelming feeling,” said Palumbo.

She can certainly do all of the shopping for you, as traditional designers do, but Palumbo is just as happy to bring clients with her to the to-the-trade fabric houses that the public normally never gets to see.

Whether it’s replicating a beloved antique piece of furniture that’s been destroyed in a storm or furnishing and decorating an entire house, “What I love most about what I do is the reaction people have to each individual project,” said Palumbo.

The shop offers a to-the-trade discount to other designers in the area, as well, who might otherwise go to New York City to do what she and Sav-Mor can do for them right out of Westfield.

“It’s nice to have a local place that offers this,” said Palumbo.

Ella Allure is located at 220 East Broad Street in Downtown Westfield. Call 908-654-3527or email Daniela@EllaAllure.com for more information. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Walk-ins welcome.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all affected be Hurricane Sandy. – Ella Allure

At Ella Allure, interior designer Daniela Palumbo is happy to be back at work. “It set everybody back,” she said of Sandy. Last week might have been a busy week at the shop. “Everybody’s fixing up their homes for the holidays.”

Palumbo’s family’s interior design shop on Staten Island, Sav-Mor Interiors, was unaffected by the storm and was even able to reopen the next day. Her mother began a collection within the community there to help those affected by the storm, and now Palumbo is extending the effort to her shop in Westfield.

For as long as supplies are needed, Ella Allure (located at 220 East Broad Street) will be a drop point for supplies for those in need, such as non-perishable food, baby supplies, hand warmers and pet supplies.

“People are just appreciative of everything right now. Whatever people are willing to donate,” said Polumbo.

Ella Allure specializes in recovering and refurnishing furniture and has beautiful window dressings such as privacy blinds and curtains. To help those whose homes have been affected by the storm, the shop is offering a 20 percent discount for hurricane-related services.

“We’re willing to step in and help any way we can,” said Palumbo. “Just to get everybody’s life back in order, make everybody feel comfortable again, especially in their own living environment.”

WESTFIELD, NJ – Although the studio has been open for a few months now, Saturday’s Grand Opening signals the official beginning of a new Interior Design Center in Downtown Westfield. This is the second location for the family owned business that has been in existence for 30 years. Sisters Daniela and Gabriela Palumbo are the third generation of this formally educated designing family. This morning the studio was bustling with well-wishers including among others, family members, local residence, and members of the town council including Mayor Andrew Skibitsky. Soft drinks and sweet treats were served as everyone enjoyed welcoming the new business to town.

Shortly after the ribbon cutting ceremony, Mayor Skibitsky said, “We are so fortunate that even in these tough economic times we’ve had businesses move in to Westfield. Whenever you have a recession like the one we’ve had in the past five years, you know you’re going to loose businesses in town. But we’ve been fortunate that a lot of the Mom and Pop’s have expanded into larger spaces.” The mayor went on to say, “Every time a small business moves out of town or goes out of business, another one is really excited about coming to Westfield. That’s a great thing and it is also what makes Westfield so vibrant.”

Located at 220 East Broad Street, Ella Allure Interior Design Center, named for the two sisters, welcomes all to stop by and say hello. The studio has a large selection of samples and offers a comfortable and cozy environment for picking that all-important fabric for your next interior design project. All employees are educated and certified in Interior Design and the passion for the industry is evident in speaking with them.

As leading purveyor of decorative fabrics, wall coverings, trimmings, Ella Allure specializes in upholstery and window covering designs, expressed through quality and executed through mastered skill. Their notable attention to design is articulated through innovation and uniqueness supplying the highest level of services in all aspects of Interior Design. Ella Allure Interior Design Center provides the best and most beautiful textiles and finishes, window coverings, wall coverings, upholstery, furnishings, decorative hardware and more. Their library offers current trends and resource to the public, while providing to-the-trade discounts to the industries Interior Designers and Decorators. Paisley Perfection: Suzanne Kasler Fabric Collection by Lee Jofa

Thank you Ellie Mroz for another great article and a shout out to Ella Allure!

Stop into Ella Allure to check out this gorgeous print and more by Suzanne Kasler featured by Lee Jofa.

I have six folders on a shelf in my kitchen desk, busting at the seams with magazine clippings ranging in design integrity from Elle Decor to Lowe’s weekly circular. Each clipping has been ear-marked, circled, folded, or ripped to highlight the reason that inspired me to tear it from its source in the first place.

Some are images, others are articles, and still others are samples (wallpaper, fabric, paint) that I have collected over the past 10 (?!) years or so. They are not color-coordinated, or arranged by source or season. They are not even divided by their intended rooms. They. Are. A. Mess. But I love them, and I will not part with them. I will, however, cut down on adding to them.

Are you on Pinterest? Or Tumblr? Or Houzz? None of them? All of them? I am a frequenter (read: cannot stop) on Houzz.com, and a newbie to (read: newly obsessed with) Pinterest. I’m just starting to explore Tumblr, and while I am enjoying what I’m finding, I’ve held off on giving myself to it completely.

There are only so many hours in the day, after all, and I still have to finish Fifty Shades of Grey AND take care of my babies. Oh, and sleep. But I digress… for those of you who are not (yet) on any of these sites, here’s the skinny: they are basically a dedicated space for you to collect your favorite images from all around the web.

In the case of Houzz, the images are home design-related (they have over 400,000 high quality interior and exterior photos for you to peruse and add to your Ideabooks), but Pinterest and Tumblr are a veritable melange of images ranging from hairstyles to inspirational quotes and stills from movie scenes. These are extremely valuable resources for the homeowner starting a remodel. Whereas we were previously limited to Google Image searches to find examples of the perfect wall paneling, light fixture for a low ceiling, or blue stone for a patio to show our contractors, we can now share an Ideabook (Houzz) or Board (Pinterest) and give the professionals a clear image of what we want.

Genius, right? We (the professionals) like it, too. It has done wonders for kickstarting a design project.

So last week, I was Tumbling through Pinterest (I think you’ll find that Tumblr and Pinterest are sufficiently intertwined. There is a lot of sharing, reblogging, and repinning from one to the other) and happened across this image of the most striking fabric I have seen in a long time. If you don’t feel like clicking, it’s the image I’ve attached here in this post.

This is a Suzanne Kasler for Lee Jofa fabric (available at Ella Allure, by the way).  Her name is Costes. (Yes, I sometimes assign gender to inanimate objects. Especially ones I lust after. Ridiculously impractical Alexander Wang shoes I spied on Barneys.com = female. Hot dress for the upcoming wedding I’m attending = female. Ruggedly distressed leather sofas I’m waiting to surface at the Restoration Hardware outlet = decidedly male.)  Let me introduce you…

I’m not saying it’s the “most amazing fabric I have ever seen.” I’m also not saying I need it “everywhere and anywhere.” I’m just saying, it’s striking. Don’t you think? It’s traditional enough to fit into most Westfield Colonials (it is paisley, after all), yet contemporary enough to be new and interesting in an “I shop compulsively on Etsy, swoon over every Anthropologie catalog, but rely mostly on J. Crew for my button downs and ballet flats” kind of way. I guess it’s transitional to a T.  I’d love to see it in my breakfast nook, as a cushion on my banquette. Or maybe as an accent chair in our great room when we get new sofas. So many options, where should she go?

So I ask you, what finds have you unearthed using these electronic magazine clippings? Have you found inspiration using these sites? Or do you just find yourself bouncing around from Boards to Books to Tumblogs, enjoying the scenery?

PS- If you find that your tastes are in line with what you see of mine, follow me on these sites! You just may find something that you think is worth Pinning/Adding/Tumbling(?) too.

Like a Fitting Room For Your Home… Welcome, Ella Allure!

Thank you Ellie Mroz for blogging such a wonderful story and including Ella Allure! We look forward to working with you and Michael Robert Construction!

Michael Robert Construction

I have always been a visual person. After college, I channeled my creativity into a career in fashion, doing some merchandising while working for the clothing company, Free People. I loved working with the clothes, accessories, and the customers as well.

Later in life when my focus shifted from boho chic dresses, the perfect fit of denim, and hand-knit legwarmers, to the more adult world of home-ownership, my professional interests shifted as well. I started becoming interested in the elements that made my little rented apartment feel like a home. I spent less time putting together the perfect outfit, and more time assembling the perfect room.

When Mike and I bought and renovated our first home in Fanwood, I loved the design process. I pushed my creative limits to new levels, designing a full bathroom, two new bedrooms, a new finished basement, and an office. The feeling of seeing a paint color you’ve been obsessing over for weeks finally going up on a wall, and coordinating perfectly with the fabrics and carpet I so carefully chose was invigorating in a completely new way for me. I was hooked.

About two years ago, we bought a home in Westfield and completely remodeled it. It was a 1939 Colonial that had not been updated or renovated since the 1950′s. The layout was terrible. It was old, it was dirty; it was perfect. It was in a great location and had solid bones. This was finally a place we could spread our wings and test the limits of our skills – Mike’s construction and my design. The dream team we had been dreaming of since Mike started his business eight years ago.

My responsibilities went from designing and decorating a room or two here and there, to doing a complete house – a total of 3,700 square feet. Flooring, trim, cabinets, stone, tile, vanities, paint (oh! the paint!), doorknobs, rugs, tables, chairs, light fixtures, window coverings, wall paper, shutters, landscaping… the list goes on and on. Daunting? Yes. Thrilling? You betcha. Good thing I had folders and folders of photos and magazine clippings from nearly a decade of dreaming, and a fantastic iPad app called Moodboard (more on this another time) to help me along.

You know what would have made the process a heck of a lot easier? A design center like Ella Allure, and the help of the shop’s owner, Daniela Palumbo.

I had the pleasure of meeting Daniela this morning at Rockn’ Joes, thanks to an introduction from an old, dear friend who works her magic at textile and wallpaper-great Thibaut, and is a powerhouse in the industry herself.

After we shared stories about our upbringing, our hobbies, and our careers over coffee and iced tea, she brought me to her work space on East Broad (next to Nirvana, near Gap Kids) and let me look around. What a perfect place to cultivate your design schemes, and make them a reality. Forgive the analogy, my heart is obviously still in two places at once, but Ella Allure is like a fitting room for your home – a place to mix and match and try things on for size before you commit.

She has an extensive library of fabrics, wallcoverings, window shades, and paint samples, and from what I could tell, a profound grasp on what “works” and what doesn’t.

Lucky for Mike’s clients, they don’t have to stumble through the process on their own. For the past month or so since I have returned to work part time, I have been available for them on a variety of levels. I have worked with clients on initial architectural design, offering my thoughts on layout and unique architectural details that they may not have thought of on their own. I have assisted them in selecting finishes, offered my two cents on their tile choices, and suggested paint colors for walls, doors, and trim. My involvement can be as much or as little as they require. I think it’s a pretty good deal for the client who is doing a major remodel and needs a little help with the finishing touches.

Enthusiasm aside, I do not pretend to be an expert. My experience comes solely from my own remodeling projects, the research I have done for others, and the pure curiosity and drive I have to explore this world of interiors. I was honored to have my work in our home chosen to be showcased in this year’s Westfield Hearth and Home Kitchen Tour in October. It was a great feeling to hear people’s positive comments as they wandered through our home; a fantastic affirmation that what I’m doing is being well received.

Thanks to Daniela, I now have a place to bring clients to explore the possibilities for their new spaces. I no longer have to travel around the state and throughout the Interwebs in search of the perfect fabric or wallpaper or paint color. She has everything I could possibly need right in her store, and she will serve it up to us with coffee and a smile.

So, welcome to Westfield, Daniela! Best of luck with your new endeavor.  My clients and I are looking forward to working with you.

And, as promised…
